As you may or may not be aware our principal, Ms. Audra Rastonis, will not be completing the school year with us at the Charleston Elementary School. Ms. Rastonis is continuing to have medical difficulties and is unable to return. We all wish her the best in her recovery.

As of the first of the year, I will be principal of Charleston Elementary School. I would like to thank all of you for the support that you have given to me throughout my interim principalship.

I look forward to your continued support in leading this wonderful school in a positive direction.

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me at the school.

On another note, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Home and School Association and their volunteers who worked so hard putting together an amazing Holiday Gift Sale here at the school. There was an abundance of items for children to choose from, and every student walked away with some special gifts to offer to their loved one. Thanks again to all those who donated items to this years event and to all the volunteers who spent the day at Charleston wrapping gifts.

Additionally, Winter Break will run from December 26, 2011 through January 2, 2012. I look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday, January 3, 2012. I wish you and all those close to you a joyous Holiday Season and a New Year of happiness.

Sincerely,
Sharon Gonyaw
Interim Principal

Local Children Receive Toys

Chastity Austin and her father, Sheriff Brian Fletcher, delivered toys to four local Charleston children, as part of a coordinated effort with local law enforcement agencies, companies and private citizens. We would like to personally thank all those involved in helping to make this a happier holiday for those children.

CES Adopts Moretown Elementary School for the Holidays

Moretown Elementary School was a Vermont School impacted by Hurricane Irene. Charleston learned about Moretown Elementary School when they were highlighted on the Channel 3 News. Charleston’s Interim Principal, Sharon Gonyaw, made an outreach call to Moretown Elementary School asking how we could assist them. School officials spoke with Mrs. Gonyaw about five families who currently still remain displaced from their homes. Charleston staff and students have adopted those five families. Our school held two different fundraisers in October. Staff and students collected coins and canned good items for these families. On Tuesday, November 22, 2011, Mrs. Gonyaw and four eighth grade students made the long trip to Moretown Elementary School to personally deliver the Thanksgiving dinners and holiday gifts for those families. We hope that the dinner and gifts bring some joy, comfort and support for these families whose lives have been impacted by Hurricane Irene.

As a result of a very generous grant from one of Charleston's residents, all of our town's children from preschool to age 18 have a membership to the Indoor Recreation of Orleans County (IROC), and all it's programs and activities.

Don't forget to take advantage of this wonderful opportunity!
